Betty Tompkins’s F*ck Paintings
Above the Michael Kors boutique on Prince Street, just beside the Apple Store, and across from Fanelli’s, is Betty Tompkins’ painting studio.
I met Betty about a year ago, and was intrigued by her paintings, as well as by her pedigree of a fast-vanishing type - a true Soho artist from the 70s who is still there. It’s fun to visit Betty, to go up a few flights of stairs from the now-bustling vanity boutique district that Soho has become, into a large room of easels, paint, drop cloths, comfy chairs, and Betty’s fuck Paintings.
Yes, Betty paints fuck paintings. Exactly what you expect. The imagery is explicit, and usually taken from photographs Betty finds online or from a collection of porn photos she’s collected over the years.
Betty has a strong following, has been selling her work actively for many years. I love it.
Feminism of the most direct sort is not dead!
Betty’s work was exhibited in Zurich by Galerie Andrea Caratsch this summer, during Art Basel.
